Description:

Robert has been assigned to a new middle school. A recently built, top-of-the line school. Since his very first day, strange and creepy things have been happening and keep getting stranger. Things that shouldn’t be happening with a brand new school. He and his new friends must get to the bottom of the peculiar events and uncover the chilling secrets hidden within the school.

I wasn’t sure what to expect when I first picked up this book. I didn’t read the back blurb or any reviews. I saw the title and cover, and I knew it was a book for me. Honestly, this book did not disappoint. It was fun, thrilling, creepy, and mysterious. As a fan of the Goosebumps series, Tales from Lovecraft Middle School would be an excellent read for anyone who likes spine-tingling books.

Perfect For

  • Mystery lovers
  • Lovecraft horror lovers
  • Those feeling out of place
  • Bully to friends

Plot

The plot of the book is creepy in such a beautiful way. I have always loved Lovecraft and the odd and creepy tales he wrote. This plot perfectly captures those tales as well as blending them with the new age. It gave you a sense of modernism with a blend of turn-of-the century mad scientist-alternate dimension-creepiness.

Characters

  • I enjoyed the main character a good amount. They were a compassionate character that helped me identify with him. I felt like they had accurate and realistic emotions throughout the book, which made them very relatable.
  • The secondary characters were also excellent. They were both likable and not likable in the right kind of way. What I mean by this is that they added lots of character to the story, weren’t all the same, and even had some heartwarming twists.
  • The antagonists were perfect! There were a few, while also keeping you guessing if there were more. However, the main antagonist of this book was excellent and reminded me of some books from the 90s. Such as My Teacher is an Alien

World Building

I adored the world-building in this book. It was a great way to handle escapism with a thrilling twist. The author truly tapped into the Lovecraft lore and universe, bringing the mysterious and unknown world into ours. To be honest, the way the author did this has me already going out to get the second book as well as the rest of them in the series.

Prose

The prose in this series was right up my alley. It was exactly the type of writing I prefer, find enjoyable, and keep my love for reading fresh. It was easy flowing, never confusing, and never condescending. Everything I look for in a middle-grade book.

Conclusion

Whether you are a fan of Lovecraft, Goosebumps, or ancient lore that is meant to never be discovered, Tales from Lovecraft Middle School: Professor Gargoyle is for you. It will provide a fun and thrilling story that has some spookiness to it, but not enough to keep you up at night. Though it will have you craving more Lovecraft.
