Perfect For

  • Fans of ghosts
  • Summer reads
  • Family heritage and history
  • Brother and sister siblings

I am a big fan of R.L. Stine and the Goosebumps series. Growing up in the 90s, it was always the first book I would look for at the Scholastic Book Fairs in school. Ghost Beach was one of the books I was never able to get ahold of personally. However, when I found out my local library had a copy, I jumped at the chance to see what I was missing out on. As far as R.L. Stine’s books went, they did not disappoint.

Plot

A perfect summer read, especially for those dark and foggy nights while listening to the waves roll in on the beach. R.L. Stine brilliantly captured a relaxing summer vacation as a young human while delivering his usual spookiness that will give you chills as you fall asleep.

It gets into the action right away and wastes no time while keeping you on your toes all the way until the very end and then some.

Characters

  • The main characters were fantastic and enjoyable siblings. They had a bit of that sibling bickering with plenty of sibling love. They were unique, with eccentric hobbies and curious minds.
  • The secondary characters very much reminded me of some kids I knew while growing up. Different personalities from the main characters and each other, while also providing a great deal of detail to the plot.
  • The antagonists were maybe my favorite part of this story. On brand for a Goosebumps book of being creepy, chilling, and engaging.

World Building

This is most certainly a Goosebumps book that I would love prequels to. R.L. Stine was able to paint a rich history of the small beachside residence and town in only a few sentences. Which shows why he is a master of his craft.

Prose

As I mentioned above, quick to action and fun the whole way. There was never a dull moment, and there was plenty to take in while trying to solve the mystery of the ghost on the beach.

Conclusion

Ghost Beach quickly became one of my favorite Goosebumps books. Or at least in the top ten. I would recommend this book to anyone who loves a good spook, even on those warm summer nights.
