Book Review: Tales from Lovecraft Middle School – The Slither Sisters
Robert has been assigned to a new middle school. A recently built, top-of-the-line school. Since his very first day, strange and creepy things have been happening and keep getting stranger. After defeating a monster from another dimension, he now must enlist the help of his friends to stop the next set of monsters from trying to take over the school.
As soon as I was done reading the first book of this series, I made sure to pick up The Slither Sisters. I couldn’t wait to get my hands on it. To be honest, the second book was just as good as the first. The stakes were higher, the world expanded, and the mystery deepened.
Perfect For
- Mystery lovers
- Lovecraft horror lovers
- Those feeling out of place
Plot
I love books that are written like Tales from Lovecraft Middle School. It feels like one large book split into many. When done right, like this one, it can be a seamless transition. I say this because the plot was the same as the first. Something fishy is happening at the middle school, monsters are taking over from another dimension, and the main character must get to the bottom.
While the core plot was the same (as it should be), the side quests differed. They were fun, unique, realistic, and exciting. It added more to the world while holding true to the goal of the book.
Characters
- Same as the first round. I enjoyed the main character a good deal. They had a compassionate character that helped me identify with him. I felt like they had accurate and realistic emotions throughout the book, which made them very relatable. Not to mention, they were consistent from the first book to the second book.
- I am enjoying these characters more in the second book. They are growing as characters, and more is being revealed about them. Plus, we had some new characters brought in that were likable and passionate.
- Perfect antagonists for the series. While I would expect the same as the first book from one perspective, it is totally different from another. (You need to read to understand.) I thought they portrayed public school antagonists very well.
World Building
This is by far my favorite universe at the moment. Mysterious enough to keep me engaged while also being the perfect level of creepiness that I enjoy. There is a great deal of mystery that perfectly accompanies an underground mad scientist. I never want the mystery to end and to see what is behind the curtain, while simultaneously needing to know all the secrets.
Prose
I believe Charles Gilman and their writing really know how to write middle-grade books. It has the best balance of not talking down to a younger audience while still elevating the prose enough to be realistic within the human language. Essentially, it doesn’t feel like they are trying too hard and are just wanting to tell a fun and engaging story.
Conclusion
The Slither Sisters is a must-read for anyone who enjoyed the first of the series. Fun, engaging, creepy, and consistent with the first novel. I have the third book on hold and can’t wait to dig in.
