Book Review: The Spiderwick Chronicles – Lucinda’s Secret
The third installment of the series The Spiderwick Chronicles where the Grace siblings continue uncovering more about their mysterious uncle Arthur Spiderwick and his book, The Field Guide.

Once again, I couldn’t put this book down. Just like the first two books in The Spiderwick Chronicles series, I didn’t want it to end, but I couldn’t wait to finish the book so I could move on to the next book. What I am truly loving about this series is the way the authors open up just a little bit more of the world with each book. Giving the reader plenty of substantial elements but making you crave for more.
Plot
The plot in this book was fantastic and pushed the story forward at the perfect pace. We were introduced to new characters, new magic, new scenery, and new mysteries. What I am finding out is that the authors do an amazing job of creating separation between each book, allowing the plot to be serialistic but still kind of isolated at the same time. What I mean by that is that each book blends with each other very well, but they are their own unique scenes of a grand story.
Characters
- The main characters are holding true to their personalities and are still enjoyable to follow along with. Though, I will say they weren’t my favorite part of the book this time. That torch was passed to the secondary characters.
- The secondary characters were magnificent in the third installment. Bringing in more of the world and adding different view points to a puzzle we are still trying to figure out. Unique, eccentric, and neither likable nor hateable, but adding a great deal to the story.
- While each character is an antagonist in some way, we get a small glimpse into the main antagonist of the series. Perfectly timed and introduced.
World Building
I have said it before and I will say it again, the world-building is my favorite part of The Spiderwick Chronicles. Adding just enough to make sure I don’t feel like it is too much and growing too large too quickly. Perfect additions each time. What I really liked about this one was that it brought just enough realism into the world to make it feel uncomfortable (in a good way). They pointed out some of the bad things in our world to make the other world more brilliant, vibrant, and almost relatable.
Prose
As always, consistent. You can go from one book to the next and feel like the voices, spacing, timing, and rhythm are all the same and connected.
Conclusion
A must-read of The Spiderwick Chronicles. If you read the first two, please don’t stop there and make sure to continue on to Lucinda’s Secret.
